Breast Cancer Treatment Options
Surgery: Lumpectomy and Mastectomy
Surgery plays a crucial role in breast cancer treatment. A lumpectomy involves removing the tumor while preserving the breast tissue, often followed by radiation. In contrast, a mastectomy involves removing the entire breast. The choice between these options depends on the tumor's size, stage, and patient preference. Both surgeries aim to eradicate cancerous cells and improve survival rates.
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and Axillary Lymph Node Dissection
To determine the spread of cancer, doctors perform a sentinel lymph node biopsy, removing the first few nodes where cancer may have spread. If cancer is detected, an axillary lymph node dissection might be necessary to remove more nodes. These procedures help prevent cancer from advancing further and guide further treatment decisions.
Radiation Therapy: External Beam and Intraoperative
Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells or prevent their growth. External beam radiation involves targeting the affected breast from outside the body, while intraoperative radiation delivers therapy directly to the tumor site during surgery. These techniques efficiently destroy cancer cells, minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
Chemotherapy: Adjuvant and Neoadjuvant
Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy or control cancer cells. Adjuvant chemotherapy is administered after surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk of recurrence. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is given before surgery to shrink large tumors, making them easier to remove. Both approaches are vital in curbing cancer's spread and enhancing treatment outcomes.
Hormone Therapy and Targeted Therapy
Hormone therapy is suitable for hormone receptor-positive breast cancers. It works by blocking hormones like estrogen that fuel tumor growth. Targeted therapies are designed to attack specific characteristics of cancer cells, minimizing harm to healthy cells. These treatments significantly improve prognosis and are often combined with other therapies for maximum effectiveness.
Immunotherapy in Breast Cancer Treatment
Immunotherapy boosts the body's natural defense mechanisms to fight cancer. It activates the immune system, allowing it to identify and attack cancer cells more effectively. While still being researched for breast cancer, certain immunotherapies show promising results, particularly in cases where other treatments may be less effective. Ongoing studies aim to optimize this treatment option for better outcomes.
